Ntando Vilakazi (17), hockey captain: High School Witteberg.

“It is a privilege for me to lead a group of leaders that are very enthusiastic and passionate with everything that they do. I intend to lead the team by being supportive on and off the field, almost like building a brotherhood which will enable each one of us to fight for each other. “En ons gee alles vir ons skool.”

Ntando says that there were a few highlights during this hockey season but one that stands out is the game against the Kingswood College who ranked in the top 40.

“We managed to keep the score tied until the last minute, which is a big accomplishment for us because we made them play our game.”

He says a leader is someone who can take ownership for their mistakes and be positive when faced with difficult situations.

“I usually apologise when I am wrong and try to fix the mistake with the help of my teammates because they have a better view, especially on the field. As a captain, I feel that it’s important to not just lead alone but lead together as a team.”

He is very excited for the last derby and says the derby is the highlight of the season although it placed the players under a lot of pressure. “I always remind my team that they are great players and that the derby is just another game that we can win if we don’t play for ourselves but for those on the sidelines, backing us. This mentality is what is keeping us motivated.”
