The University of the Free State (UFS) has officially entered a new era of leadership and vision with the inauguration of Professor Hester C. Klopper as its 15th Vice-Chancellor and Principal. The ceremony, held this morning, was steeped in tradition and marked by a strong sense of community and commitment to building a responsible societal future.
Among the distinguished guests was Dr Mimmy Gondwe, Deputy Minister of Higher Education, who attended the event in support of the university’s continued growth and transformation.

From 2013 to 2015, Klopper led one of the world’s largest international membership organisations, representing more than 135 000 members in 95 countries. She has served on numerous global and national boards focusing on health policy, nursing science, and doctoral education.
Klopper’s accolades are numerous. She is a fellow of the Academy of Science of South Africa and the first South African inducted into the American Academy of Nursing. She has also received the prestigious Fellowship Ad Eundem from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Her research excellence has been recognised through inductions into both the Sigma and Fundisa Halls of Fame.
With over 30 years of experience in strategic leadership, research, and teaching, Klopper brings a deep passion for shaping the future through education, development, and service.
