The absence of the Moqhaka Local Municipality’s mayor, or any municipal representative at a recent stakeholder engagement in Kroonstad regarding the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) suggests that the municipal management has a complete disregard for the community and their needs.
On 18 November Motloheloa Ellis Mokatsane, executive mayor, failed to attend the stakeholder engagement arranged by his office.
Coupled with the delay and eventual disengagement by MEC Lerato Khotle, the meeting was rendered ineffective and considered a waste of valuable time for stakeholders.
The meeting was planned to discuss plans with business owners and stakeholders of Moqhaka for the 2025-’26 period concerning the municipality’s economic growth.
Marelize Boeije, DA councillor for the municipality, says the mayor’s lack of accountability and commitment is unacceptable.
“This is not the first time leadership in the Moqhaka Local Municipality has fallen short, and it is evident that under the current administration, trust in the council is eroding rapidly.
“Stakeholders have every right to feel disillusioned when their concerns are ignored and their time is wasted.”
While the municipality has apologised for the inconvenience caused, the absence of municipal management was unacceptable.
“We need urgent action to rebuild trust and ensure that such failures do not happen again. We call on the municipality to take immediate steps to reschedule the meeting with proper leadership in attendance.”
Boeije says they remain committed to holding this municipality accountable and to ensure that service delivery and good governance are prioritised.
The municipality still does not have a permanent muncicipal manager of chief financial officer (CFO). These positions that are crucial for managing the municipality.
