Students of the Kroonstad Black Belt Academy participated in a provincial tournament that was held in Johannesburg on Saturday, 10 June.
Eleven of these students competed in traditional events which included forms, weapons form, combat weapon sparring, and sparring.
They also competed in team combat weapon and team sparring events, where a three-person team consisting of two males and one female compete against other teams.
Participants competed for points in each division. At the end of the tournament season, the top five students in each division will compete in the Tournament of Champions which is held in October each year, in conjunction with the American Taekwondo Asscociation of South Africa’s (ATA-SA) national tournament and family festival.
A total of 57 medals (29 gold, 17 silver, and 11 bronze) were bagged by the students.
The following students competed in the colour belt divisions and attained the following results:
- Danika Viljoen – first place in forms, third in weapons, first in combat weapon sparring, and second in sparring;
- Iwan Landman – second place in forms, second in weapons form, and second in combat weapon sparring;
- Hanko Stols – third place in forms, first in weapons form, third in combat weapon sparring, and third in sparring;
- Kayla Coetzee – first place in forms, first in weapons form, first in combat weapon sparring, first in sparring, second in Xtreme Martial Arts (XMA) form, and first in XMA weapons form;
- Burhan Coetzee – second place in forms, second in weapons form, second in combat weapon sparring, first in XMA weapons form;
- Crystal Bailie – second place in forms, first in weapons form, third in combat weapon sparring, second in sparring, third in team combat weapon sparring (elite division), second in team sparring (elite division), first in team combat weapon sparring (legends division);
- SJ van Rensburg – first place in forms, first in weapons form, first in combat weapon sparring, first in sparring, first in team combat weapon sparring, and first in team sparring;
- Wian Kotze – first place in forms, first in weapons form, first in combat weapon sparring, first in sparring, first in team combat weapon sparring; and first in team sparring; and
- Jessica Pienaar – second place in forms, third in weapons form, second in combat weapon sparring, third in sparring, first in team combat weapon sparring, and first in team sparring.
In the Black Belt division the results are as follows:
- Johann Pienaar – third place in forms, second in weapons form, second in combat weapon sparring, second in sparring, third in team combat weapon sparring (elite division), second in team sparring (elite division), and first in team combat weapon sparring (legends division); and
- Christian Barnard – first place in forms, first in weapons form, third in sparring, third in team combat weapon sparring (elite division), second in team sparring (elite division), and first in team combat weapon sparring (legends division).
