Fourteen talented students of the Kroonstad Black Belt Academy Martial Arts School showcased their skills at the ATA-SA Africa Big 5 Challenge Family Festival held in Pretoria.
In the event that took place at the end of September, these students secured an impressive total of 61 medals in various disciplines. This tournament marked the first event of the 2026 tournament season, drawing participation from martial artists across the region.
Students displayed remarkable talent in competitions including traditional sparring, traditional forms, form weapons, and max weapons.
Morné England of the Kroonstad Academy expressed pride in his students’ achievements, stating, “Our students have worked tirelessly to prepare for this tournament, and their hard work clearly paid off. Winning 25 gold, 20 silver, and 16 bronze medals is a testament to their dedication.”

Among the participants were students from both Colour Belt and Black Belt divisions. Mathew Bailie, Mellany Bailie, Sonja Coetzee, and Dillon Smuts participated in the Colour Belt division. Katya Pestana, Daniellè Pestana, Megan Pestana, Burhan Coetzee, Kayla Coetzee, Johann Pienaar, Wian Kotze, Adèl Jansen van Vuuren, Crystal Bailie, and Jessica Pienaar participated in the Black Belt division.
The Kroonstad team was well-represented in the tournament, with medal wins highlighting both individual and team efforts.
