The opening of a new multi-purpose sports field at the Motswela Secondary School in Gelukwaarts, Kroonstad, has been welcomed by the community.

This is one of seven Let’s Play multi-purpose sports fields that were sponsored and donated by MultiChoice towards sport-loving learners in rural areas.

On Wednesday (07/12), the official opening ceremony of the field at Motswela was attended by the MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation in the Free State, Limakatso Mahasa; the MEC for Education, Tate Makgoe; personnel of the school; guests; and learners.

The multi-purpose field was designed to be used for hockey, five-a-side soccer, tennis, volleyball and netball. In addition to the field the school was also presented with Let’s Play kit bags filled with a variety of sports equipment, including training and playing kits.

“The Let’s Play fields initiative is about developing a love for sport and introducing previously disadvantaged schools to sporting codes that they would not have otherwise been able to participate in,” said Collen Dlamini, group executive for corporate affairs at MultiChoice.

“Children must be active, and we want to ensure that future sports stars are equipped to fulfill their dreams,” he said.

“Growing a healthier generation is a vital component of the country’s education system, since being more active helps kids to be healthier – which in turn helps them to concentrate better, leading to better academic performance,” Mahasa added.

Over the past few years, Let’s Play has invested more than R20 million in programmes in efforts of creating a healthier youth generation, with over 315 school teachers being trained in new physical education.
