The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is privileged to acknowledge, thank, and celebrate women, together with the rest of South Africa, during this Women’s Month – especially those who are part of its national blood donor base.

Women represent 45% of this donor base, and many women’s lives have been saved through blood transfusions.

The SANBS knows the extent to which the lives of women and that of their family members can be changed through blood transfusions, given that almost 28% of the blood issued is used in childbirth and gynecological emergencies.

This Women’s Month, the SANBS is celebrating women in society, as well as their families.

SANBS Kroonstad, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Kroonstad, will host the annual Rotary Club Dr. Barry Kriel Medical Day, which is a fun-filled community family event focused on health and wellness, as well as blood donation and saving lives.

Members of the Kroonstad community are invited to enjoy Saturday, 19 August, with the SANBS and partners. The event is held at the Kroonstad Donor Centre at Checkers from 09:00 until 15:00.

Those who attend the event can enjoy the benefits of free health screenings. These include blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol tests, free blood grouping screening tests, eye scans, dental screenings and referral.

A variety of stalls will offer health and wellness, beauty and fashion, lifestyle and food products, as well as fun activities for the entire family.

Also at the event, help the SANBS collect 100 units of blood – which can save hundreds of lives.

People who are between the ages of 16 and 75, weigh more than 50 kg and lead a safe lifestyle and feel healthy, may register as a blood donor.

Donors with blood group O, specifically O negative, can make the biggest impact by giving blood.

This is due to group O being known as the universal blood type, as it is compatible with all other blood types and is used for all emergency transfusions.

Donate blood. Your blood saves lives.
