In their eagerness to learn how to make money from waste, more than 100 delegates attended a recycling session at the Civic Centre Kroonstad on Friday, 18 March.

The South African enterprise Green Kid, under the leadership of Moss Kekana, celebrated Global Recycling Day locally by teaching people about recycling and urging residents to make Kroonstad cleaner.

“By working together, residents will not only create a cleaner environment, but also make a better living,” said Kekana.

Two years ago he started a buy-back centre in Kroonstad, where he buys plastic, paper and tins from recyclers and collects large-scale waste like cardboard boxes from local companies.

He then bales the waste before it is transported to Johannesburg, where it is sold to major recycling companies.

Early in life Kekana was taught that his dreams and ideals will only be realised through hard work.

Although Kekana started small, he ensured compliance with all relevant legislation and slowly built up his buy-back centre.

“Kekana provides us with hope for the future,” said Petro Naude, managing director of Serdev, the development company of the Sernick Group.

“He is sharing his passion for recycling with all who want to participate. As a community, we must support entrepreneurs like this. We all need to make recycling and collecting waste a ‘cool’ business.”
