The Northern Free State Caregivers (NFSCG) in Kroonstad is a beacon of hope for cancer patients. This organisation stands as a compassionate pillar of support for those battling cancer.

Established in 2007, this non-profit organisation is dedicated to providing comprehensive healthcare services, emotional support, and essential resources for cancer patients and their families. With a multifaceted approach encompassing terminal patient support, community healthcare services, a fully equipped medical centre, and specialised oncology services, the NFSCG is committed to making a significant difference in the lives of vulnerable individuals.

Founded by Felicity Combrinck, the NFSCG emerged from a heartfelt vision to assist terminally ill patients with nowhere else to turn.

“We started with a simple idea of compassion and care. Our mission is to ensure that no patient feels alone during their journey with cancer,” says Combrinck.

Over the years, the organisation has expanded its reach, operating from its office at 13B Sarel Cilliers Street, Kroonstad; depending entirely on donations, as there is no government support.

A standout feature of the NFSCG is its free 24-hour home care service for cancer patients. This service provides critical medical assistance and emotional support to patients and their families. Furthermore, the NFSCG operates a loan bank offering medical equipment at no cost, including hospital beds, wheelchairs, walking frames, and oxygen cylinders, ensuring that patients have access to necessary tools for their care. Free wigs for chemotherapy patients and breast prostheses for mastectomy cases are also available.

In addition to its core services, the NFSCG has made significant strides in community health, particularly in the areas of HIV support and home-based care in Maokeng and Brentpark. This outreach is essential in addressing the needs of some of the most vulnerable communities. The organisation also collaborates with two private oncologists from Bloemfontein who provide specialised oncology services directly at the Naudé Hall Medical Centre. This collaboration ensures patients receive expert care close to home, reducing the need for travel and associated stress.

The organisation is particularly active during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, offering free breast examinations to raise awareness and encourage early detection. This initiative underscores the organisation’s commitment to education and prevention, in addition to direct care.

Despite its comprehensive services, the NFSCG faces ongoing challenges, particularly in securing funding.

“Early detection can save lives, and we want to provide the necessary support to facilitate that. We need continuous support from the community and businesses to sustain our services. Every donation, no matter how small, goes a long way in helping us support those who are battling with illness,” says Combrinck.

Kroonstad residents seeking assistance or more information are encouraged to visit the NFSCG office Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 12:00, or they can reach out by dialling 084 206 8912.
