Fouriesburg and surrounds are suffering a crisis due to raw sewage flowing freely in the environment.

On 27 August the DA in the Dihlabeng Municipality opened a case at the Fouriesburg Police Station against Lekgetho Mokgatlhe, municipal manager, to address the situation.

The case stems from the continuous discharge of untreated sewage from the Fouriesburg Sewage Plant. It was found that the sewage flooding makes its way through grazing fields into the Grootspruit River, ultimately contaminating the Caledon River. This leads to an enormous health risk for residents, farmers and the residents of nearby towns, and could even affect Lesotho.

“Beyond the local impact, South Africa’s failure to address this issue violates international water-related agreements with neighbouring countries, damaging our diplomatic relations,” says Estie Senekal, DA councillor in the Dihlabeng Municipality.

“The urgency of this matter is further highlighted by recent cholera outbreaks in parts of the Free State.

“It is imperative that permanent solutions are promptly implemented.”

The DA has not only taken legal action, but has also engaged with the Green Scorpions, emphasising its commitment to environmental protection.
