Officials of the Department of Correctional Services in Kroonstad took the initiative to assist a waste picker in their town by replacing her small wheelbarrow with a brand-new trolley made from scrap metal.
“Lizebeth Singwane’s excitement knew no bounds when Bizzah Makhate officials surprised her by handing her a brand-new steel trolley,” says Refiloe Tau, communications officer of the department.
“Thousands of people make a living by collecting recyclable materials.
“When our officials saw her struggling with a huge bag that was too heavy to carry and a small wheelbarrow, they decided to build a new trolley to assist her with collection.”
Singwane, a mother of ten, expressed her appreciation.
“I am so pleased to receive such a wonderful gift,” she said.
“I will now be able to cover more areas with ease, to collect more than enough items, and it will be easier to carry.”
The trolley was handed over on Wednesday (19/01).
