The maternity patient who was travelling in an ambulance of the Free State Department of Health when it overturned on its way from Steynsrus to Kroonstad last week is doing well, although still in hospital.

The baby girl she gave birth to shortly after the ordeal is unharmed and healthy.

On Wednesday (16/11) the driver of the ambulance lost control of the vehicle on a stretch of the R76 road where road works are being done.

“It is suspected that waterlogging on this road could be the cause of this accident,” says Mondli Mvambi, spokesperson for the department.

The driver of the ambulance was admitted to hospital but discharged soon after.

The patient, who sustained head injuries, was stabilised. She gave birth to a baby girl at the Boitumelo Hospital at 13:00. She has since undergone an operation, and remains under observation.
