The new acting municipal manager of the Moqhaka Local Municipality says the water and sanitation issues in the municipality are his priority.

Advocate Mzwakhe Mofokeng was appointed in this position on 1 June. His mission and vision for Moqhaka is to maintain and improve service delivery.

In the first three weeks he has been acting, he already bought four new vehicles from the government garage, which will be delivered soon. The vehicles will be dedicated to water and sanitation, to deal with water leakages and sewerage spillages across the municipal area.

Mofokeng is planning to buy four more vehicles to improve the current service delivery plans of Moqhaka.

Aggressive revenue enhancement will kick off in the 2022-’23 financial year in an effort to improve the municipality’s financial outlook.

Residents and businesses are encouraged to pay their municipal bills. An amnesty period for those who do not comply will also be considered to allow them to make payment arrangements with the municipality.

Mofokeng said it was a privilege for the municipality to take hands with Ignite and Revive Kroonstad and similar organisations, as well as unions, businesses and residents, to improve the towns in the Moqhaka municipal area: Kroonstad, Viljoenskroon and Steynsrus.

Kroonstad was recently voted the Free State winner of the television programme Kwêla’s Dorp van die jaar competition and will participate in the final round, hoping to claim the title as national winner.

Cost-cutting, service delivery and tools of the trade are also issues that Mofokeng is addressing.

He further said Moqhaka is open for business and investment, and he invites investors and is open for any new businesses and plans that will benefit the residents of Moqhaka.

  • Mofokeng is an LLB graduate from the University of the North (University of Limpopo) and was admitted as an advocate in the Free State Division of the High Court.

In 2002 he was appointed as the Dihlabeng Local Municipality’s corporate services director, and in 2003 as the Free State Department of Police, Roads and Transport’s director of civilian oversight.

From 2007 to 2009 he was the acting head of the Department of Police, Roads and Transport.

He was the provincial head of Back to Basics from 2014 until 2016 at the Office of the Premier in the Free State, from 2020 until 2021 he was the Free State Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs’ (Cogta) lead administrator at the Mangaung Metro Municipality, and he is currently the Free State Cogta chief director of the intervention unit.
