The De Beers Voorspoed Mine, Kroonstad, congratulates the Free State matriculants of 2022, who achieved an 88,5% pass rate in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination, as the Free State was again crowned the best-performing province – for a fourth consecutive year.
The Free State also yielded the two leading districts nationally, with Motheo taking top position with a 90,8% pass rate and Fezile Dabi following in second place with 90,4%.
An educational intervention by the De Beers Group, in partnership with the Department of Basic Education, that benefited matriculants in the Free State is the Mathematics and Science programme that supports learners and educators from 26 high schools across the province.
The three-month programme sponsored by Voorspoed Mine, in partnership with the Free State Department of Education, offers work revision and practical lessons and inspires the learners to achieve good results in subjects like Physical and Life Sciences, Mathematics, Accounting and Business Studies.
The mine also pays for the educators’ salaries and provides laptops to top-achieving learners. In celebrating the class of 2022, Voorspoed Mine donated 75 laptops – of which 30 went to the province’s top achievers, and 45 will go to the district. The total amount spent towards the programme for 2022 was 1,6 million.
De Beers acknowledges and congratulates the following learners who participated in the programme and made it to the Free State’s list of 100 top achievers:
- Kanono Thato Clinton of the Matlwangtlwang Secondary School;
- Karabo Michelle Mofokeng of the Sediba-Thuto Secondary School;
- Katleho Tsholo of the Dr Cingo Comprehensive School;
- Isaac Tshepiso Pilane of the Phehellang Secondary School; and
- Lefa Freddy Madia of the Kgabareng Secondary School.
“We are committed to continue working together with our valued stakeholders to develop our schools, have better educational outcomes and to build brighter, safer and healthier communities around our operating areas – and ultimately for our beloved country – as well as to ensure our presence continues to benefit society even after life of mine,” said Lebogang Mphaka, corporate affairs manager of Voorspoed Mine.
“A huge congratulations to the Free State leaners. We wish them the best for the future.”
