Residents of Matlwangtlwang, Steynsrus, who were left homeless after severe and devasting storms since early December 2023 received the first batch of informal houses from the national Department of Human Settlement.
At the beginning of February, the Department of Human Settlement delivered informal houses to 46 beneficiaries of the Matlwangtlwang disaster that occurred on 7 December. During these storms, 265 houses (formal and informal) were damaged and destroyed.
The new informal houses were delivered in packages, each containing building materials of zinc plates, gum poles, aluminium windows, a door, nails, a padlock, six rafters, and a timber frame per household.
“This was made possible by the sterling job performed by the Moqhaka Local Municipality’s Disaster Management centre, the provincial and national Department of Human Settlement, and the residents of Matlwangtlwang in Steynsrus,” said Dika Kheswa, spokesperson for the Moqhaka Local Municipality.
The municipality also expressed their gratitude towards everybody who was involved since the disasters first struck in December, and who have assisted residents with a helping hand where needed.
Kheswa said that the second batch of informal houses would be allocated soon, and the necessary information would then be thoroughly communicated to the beneficiaries.
