The top sports stars in para sport in the Free State will be celebrated at the annual Free State Sport Stars gala dinner, a prestigious event presented by the University of the Free State (UFS) and Central24. This glamorous occasion recognises the best para sport athletes in the province, highlighting their achievements and dedication to their respective sports.
In 2024, the following para sport athletes will be honoured:
- Louzanne Coetzee (para athletics – T11): Coetzee, along with her guide Estean Badenhorst, made headlines by winning a bronze medal at the World Para Athletics Championships in Kobe, Japan. Their remarkable performance continued at the 2024 Paralympic Games, where Coetzee secured another bronze medal in the women’s T11 1 500 m final, solidifying her status as one of South Africa’s top para-athletes.
- Adel Basson (para athletics): Basson earned a bronze medal in the Class F57 Discus and Javelin at the Toyota Championships. Her accomplishments reflect the hard work and perseverance that characterise ParaAthletics.
- Karabo Morapedi (boccia – BC3): Morapedi, along with his ramp operator Vincent Ramochela, represented South Africa at the 2024 Paralympic Games. Their participation underscores the growing recognition and support for boccia, a sport that showcases skill and strategy.
- Nicholas Newman (para athletics): Newman made waves in the sporting community by participating in the SA Triathlon sprint age group and the Two Oceans Marathon, demonstrating the versatility and determination of para-athletes.
