The De Beers Group congratulated the Free State Department of Education for attaining an impressive 89% matric pass rate and holding onto their position as the top-performing province for four consecutive years. The department and learners celebrated this achievement at a ceremony in Kroonstad on Monday, 22 January.

The Motheo District Municipality was also congratulated for ranking among five high-achieving districts in South Africa with a remarkable 91,2 % pass rate.

The mine and the department has a successful partnership with the mine’s educational support programme. The mine prides itself in the support it provides for the department on the three-month long Maths and Science programme which inspires learners to achieve excellent grades in Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Accounting and Business Management.

The top performing students in the province are provided with laptops and the educators’ salaries are also paid by the mining group. The programme has proven beneficial to the matriculants in the Free State, as it supports learners and educators from 22 high schools identified by the Department of Education.

Petrus Jordaan, the mine’s closure manager, conveyed his enthusiasm and pride for the province’s matric learners, lauding them on their remarkable accomplishment.

“As a proud father of one of the 2023 matriculants, I am immensely confident that each one of you has a bright future ahead. May this success serve as a stepping stone towards even greater achievement in your journey ahead.”
