The Johan Slabbert Special Needs Education School in Kroonstad, based in the Fezile Dabi education district, has been awarded the title for the best school in the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) awards.
On Thursday, 26 October, the annual NSNP awards ceremony was held on the school’s premises. This prestigious event was opened by the well-known local pastor and musician Julius Magan, and Megan Els.
The NSNP has provided daily nutritious meals to more than 9 million learners in primary and secondary schools since 1994.
The objective of the NSNP is to reduce hunger in order to improve learning outcomes and school attendance among the learners.
The programme also advocates a healthy lifestyle by promoting an annual National Nutrition Week celebration.
This year it was celebrated from 9 to 15 October with the theme “Feel good with food”.
The school prides itself in ensuring its learners live out their unique character.
Not only was the school recognised and awarded the title of best school, their vegetable garden which is used to provide vegetables for the NSNP programme, was also selected as the best school garden in the district.
