A masters swimmer from Kroonstad did well at the 37th National Masters Swimming Championship held in March at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) Swimming Pool in Bellville.
This was the 12th national competition for Barbara Fraatz (56), on which she embarked with great zeal after nearly two years of no swimming due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
She swam in six individual events in the age group 55 to 59 years.
She also swam in four relay events – here all four participants’ ages are added together to qualify them for taking part as a team.
All the events she swam in were long course (LC) events.
Individually, Fraatz was first in the 200 m freestyle in a time of 2:38.88.
She was second in the 100 m freestyle in 1:11.81 and third in the 100 m backstroke in 1:27.50. She was second in the 50 m freestyle in 32.57, second in the in the 50 m butterfly in 38.40 and fourth in the 50 m backstroke in 39.57.
In the relay, age group 200 to 239, her team was second in the 4 x 50 m freestyle for women.
The rest of the relay events she took part in were in the age group 240 to 279.
Her team was first in the 4 x 50 m medley for women, second in the mixed 4 x 50 m freestyle, second in the mixed 4 x 100 m freestyle and sixth in the mixed 4 x 50 m medley.
Fraatz is a member of the Coelacanth Masters Swimming Club in Pretoria.
