Two suspects were arrested by the Hawks for fraudulently obtaining a liquor licence.

Alinah Mohapi (30), alongside her co-accused liquor board official, Moruti Gift Poli (53), appeared in the Bethlehem Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 25 November, charged with corruption.

Mohapi was arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team based in Bethlehem on Thursday.

In this matter, a complainant met with Poli between November 2023 and January 2024. Poli informed the complainant that he would be able to arrange a liquor licence for her if she paid him R30 000. The complainant agreed, paid R5 000 in cash, and was given the banking details as to whom the outstanding R25 000 was to be paid. After the R25 000 was deposited into Mohapi’s bank account, it was transferred to Poli’s.

Mohapi appeared alongside Poli in court after the latter had handed himself over to the Hawks on Monday. Both remain in custody and the case has been postponed to 2 December for their formal bail application.
